Life can cause your emotions to ebb and flow which often leaves you feeling confused, instable and with a lack of true purpose. While there may be moments of worldly success or fleeting happiness, not having your emotions in check can result in spiritual emptiness and misguided priorities.
Obtaining undisturbed composure involves cultivating a calm, steady, and unshaken state of mind, even in the face of challenges or uncertainties. This composure is rooted in trust in God, self-awareness, and a disciplined mindset. It reflects a deep reliance on God’s peace and promises, which guard your heart and mind regardless of external circumstances. Here’s how to develop this composure:
1. Trust in God’s Sovereignty
- Composure comes from knowing that God is in control of every situation. Trusting His perfect plan allows you to remain steady, even when life feels uncertain.
- “The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in Him, and He helps me” (Psalm 28:7).
- How:
- Meditate on Scriptures that affirm God’s faithfulness.
- Pray daily, surrendering your worries and trusting Him to guide you.
2. Abide in God’s Peace
- True composure comes from experiencing the peace of God, which transcends understanding. This peace guards your heart and mind against fear and anxiety.
- “Do not be anxious about anything… And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7).
- How:
- Pray when you feel troubled, asking God to fill you with His peace.
- Pause before responding or reacting, as God to guide your steps.
- Reflect on God’s past faithfulness to remind yourself of His provision.
3. Practice Emotional Self-Control
- Undisturbed composure requires managing your emotions rather than allowing them to control you. Scripture encourages self-control as a fruit of the Spirit.
- “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control” (Galatians 5:22-23).
- How:
- Pause before reacting, giving yourself time to respond thoughtfully rather than emotionally.
- Deep breathing can help to calm your mind and regain composure.
- Pray for the Holy Spirit to guide your words and actions in tense situations.
4. Meditate on God’s Word
- God’s Word provides wisdom, perspective, and reassurance, helping you stay grounded and composed.
- “Great peace have those who love Your law, and nothing can make them stumble” (Psalm 119:165).
- How:
- Spend time daily reading and meditating on Scripture.
- Memorize verses that encourage calmness and reliance on God, such as Isaiah 26:3: “You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in You.”
5. Be Present in the Moment
- Worrying about the future or dwelling on the past disrupts composure. Focus on the present moment, trusting God to handle what’s beyond your control.
- “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself” (Matthew 6:34).
- How:
- Practice mindfulness by focusing on your current surroundings and responsibilities.
- When overwhelmed, take deep breaths and center your thoughts on God’s presence.
6. Surround Yourself with Encouragement
- The people you surround yourself with can influence your mindset. Choose relationships that uplift and encourage a spirit of peace and faith.
- “Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm” (Proverbs 13:20).
- How:
- Spend time with others who model calmness and trust in God.
- Avoid excessive exposure to negative influences, such as fear-inducing news or toxic relationships.

7. Rest in God’s Timing
- Anxiety often stems from wanting things to happen on your own timetable. Trusting God’s perfect timing brings calmness and patience.
- “Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for Him” (Psalm 37:7).
- How:
- When tempted to rush or force outcomes, remind yourself that God’s timing is always best.
- Pray for patience and trust during seasons of waiting.
8. Respond Rather Than React
- Composure involves intentional, thoughtful responses rather than impulsive reactions.
- “Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry” (James 1:19).
- How:
- Before responding to a situation, pause to ask:
- What would God want me to do?
- Is my reaction coming from faith or fear?
- Before responding to a situation, pause to ask:
9. Cultivate Gratitude
- Gratitude shifts your focus from what’s wrong to what’s right. This mindset fosters calmness and joy.
- “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” (1 Thessalonians 5:18).
- How:
- Keep a gratitude journal, listing things you’re thankful for daily.
- Thank God in prayer for His blessings, even in difficult moments.
10. Take Care of Your Body and Mind
- Physical well-being impacts mental and emotional composure. Rest, nutrition, and exercise support a balanced, peaceful mindset.
- How:
- Get adequate sleep and prioritize physical health.
- Engage in calming activities, such as reading, walking, journaling, or meditating on Scripture.
11. Lean on the Holy Spirit
- Composure is ultimately a result of the Holy Spirit’s work within you. Invite Him to guide your thoughts, emotions, and actions.
- “The Spirit helps us in our weakness” (Romans 8:26).
- How:
- Pray daily for the Holy Spirit to fill you with His peace and wisdom.
- Be attentive to His prompting, especially in challenging moments.
12. Remember Your Eternal Hope
- Keeping an eternal perspective reminds you that life’s struggles are temporary. This hope gives strength to stay composed.
- “For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all” (2 Corinthians 4:17).
- How:
- Reflect on God’s promises of eternal life and His unchanging love.
- Let the hope of heaven put present difficulties into perspective.
